Spring Conference

Twice a year members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, aka Mormons, gather to watch Conference. This is basically like Mormon Ted Talks, each speaker sharing valuable stories about their life experiences and wisdom about how to live a life that will bring you closer to our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ who is our brother and redeemer. Two things I love most about Conference:

1. I get to hear direct counsel from men and women who bring me inspired messages about issues I'm facing today. These people typically have gray hair and are retired but I love that my Mormon culture values those who have lived a little longer. The world we are a part of often makes those who are aging seem detached and useless but I'm grateful that I get to hear stories from folks who essentially grew up in an entirely different world.
2. I get to watch from the comfort of my house. I attend church weekly for three hours which is considered a large commitment but during conference I get to snack on M&Ms and relax on a couch while listening to the messages. I remember as a kid I would line my dolls up in the living room and pretend we were at church. I would hold them and hush their cries while watching, barely understanding what the conference messages were about but I do distinctly remembering that I liked the feeling I got as a I watched and occasionally turning to my parents and seeing my mom blot her tear filled eyes. I'm grateful I'm a member of this church that has kept me grounded, happy, driven and focused on being a little better.

Speaking of gratitude, one of the talks I heard was about Gratitude by Elder Dieter F Uchtdorf which really reminded me that I have so much to be grateful for even when times are tough. I think it universally appeals to all people no matter what creed.
