Sundancing

For the past four years I have been a volunteer for the Sundance Film Festival. I simply love it! I adore documentaries so this festival is the place to be. Every year people ask me, what movies were my favorite, and pathetically I can only remember one or two of the ten films I saw. This year I will be documenting all the movies I see on this very blog. Let's begin...

This is a documentary centered upon glaciers melting. The Extreme Ice Surveyors (EIS) are a group of glacier experts, photographers and guys that look like they should work at Patagonia. The team set up cameras in Iceland, Greenland, Alaska and Montana to document glaciers recession. These cameras took pictures automatically daily over the course of 4 years. The results from this process were absolutely startling. The guys who made the Cove also helped make this movie. So it was similar in that it was all about process and then it actually delivered the results at the end of the movie. I was a little bored at times but the stunning landscapes were worth the watch. I give it 3 out of 5 stars.

This was a Quebec film which was centered about grief. In the film an elementary school teacher kills herself in her classroom, where a few of her students discover her the following morning. I know CRAZY! The students are shocked and traumatized, naturally. Then Monsieur Lazhar, a man who had just read about the incident, volunteers to be the classes' teacher. Monsieur Lazhar is dealing with his own personal grief, since he lost his wife and children to a fire in his homeland. I thought the movie would be dreary and sad but it turned out to be a uplifting film about mourning and finding joy. The kids in this movie were awesome actors. I would give it 3.5 stars.
Stay tuned for more reviews.
